Water Well Pump Facts You Need to Know

Whether you have well water or are considering tapping into it, there are a few facts you need to know to ensure your pump is the right size and type for your residential property. A pump that is too small will cost you money in the end, as it will wear down prematurely. Let’s talk about water well pumps because we here at King Water Wells believe knowledge is power.

Well Water System 101

Your residential water well or soon-to-be water well system draws water out of an underground well. It then transfers the water into a storage tank. The water in the storage tank is pressurized. The water well pump draws the water out of the storage tank and into your home through your household plumbing.

Water Well Pump Types

There are two primary well pump types: jet and submersible. Both use pumps to push the water out of the well and into the storage tank, and both use motors to keep the pumps submerged in the water. A jet pump has a pressure tank in its assembly whereas a submersible pump does not usually have the tank.

Water Well Depth

The depth of your water well determines the pump best for you. Submersible pumps push water upward, so they are ideal for deep water wells. Shallower wells need a jet pump. The actual depth of your well is calculated based on the located of the well pump, and your well is

  • Shallow if less than 25 feet
  • Deep if 25 feet to 110 feet
  • Deep if 25 feet to 400 feet

Generally, a shallow jet pump is recommended for wells less than 25 feet. A deep jet pump works well in 25 feet to 110 feet wells. Finally, submersible pumps are ideal for wells that are 25 feet to 400 feet. This said, it’s best to take into account your household size and water use, as well, to pick the best pump.

Well Pump Size

When you look at water well pumps, you’ll see a GPM rating. The GPM stands for gallons-per-minute, and this helps you select the right pump. For example, an average-sized home needs a pump with an 8-to-12 GPM rating. You need 1 GPM for every water fixture in your home, including appliances.
