Causes of Water Well Casing Cracks

Your water well casing serves three purposes. It seals your water supply, keeps contaminants out, and supports the well wall. The casing may crack over time for one or more reasons. We can replace your casing and water well if either have been damaged. You can tell if it is damaged by the water flow and dirt in the water. You may see dirt in the water as it flows out of your tap.

Shifting Ground

If you live in an area that does not experience many earthquakes, it is possible for the ground to shift naturally, or even be encouraged to shift during construction projects. Depending on how severe the shift is, casings and water wells can crack if the ground shifts. Call us if you’ve had large-scale construction on your property. We can inspect the well casing to make sure it is not cracked.

Pressurization

If it is constantly subject to excessive pressure, the water well casing may crack. If the seams of the casing were not properly welded, it can crack and become brittle. Large stones or tree roots, as well as other ground materials, can press on the casing and cause cracks. This can lead to groundwater contamination and other contaminants in your well.

Lightning

If you live in an area that is prone to lightning and thunder storms, you may be in some trouble. If the lightning strikes your water well, it could cause damage to the casing. Casings are generally made of metal and attract lightning to them. Avoid being in close proximity to any metal objects during lightning storms. Avoid letting lightning strike your water supply.

Corrosion

Water corrodes metal, as you know. The casing must be replaced eventually because it has corroded and rust has eaten away at the metal. The rust could also get into your water supply, contaminating it. If the casing begins to corrode, keep an eye on it and contact us immediately.

Gardening

We mentioned that tree roots can cause cracks in the water well casing if they get too close. The casing can also be damaged if it is pushed with a lawnmower or hacked with a weed-whacker. When you’re near your water source, be careful with your gardening tools.

We would be happy to inspect your water well casing, so call us today to schedule an appointment. While we are at it, we will inspect the water well and test the water if it has been over a year since this is been done.
