Although water well systems are built to function on their own, there are some routine maintenance tasks that homeowners should do to ensure that the system is healthy. Different maintenance tasks should be completed at different times of the year, especially in Michigan, because these will be based on the change of seasons. With Spring just around the corner, below are just a few tips for getting your water well system ready for spring!
Visual Inspection
This first tip may seem obvious, but many homeowners fail to take the time to visually inspect check their water well after all of the snow is gone. Extreme temperatures, ice buildup, and other things relating to cold weather can cause damage to your system. You will want to inspect your well casing, well cap, and any electrical conduits for cracks, rust, or other damage. If you spot any damage or anything looks like it is missing or out of place, be sure to contact us to come inspect your system!
Clean-up the Wellhead
To ensure that nothing is growing into or has fallen in the wellhead, pick up any sticks or large rocks from around the area and pull larger weeds. Small weeds and grass are okay to have growing around the area, but anything beyond that will start creating a root system that could potentially push into and disrupt or damage the casing, conduit, or controls of the water well system.
Water Testing
The CDC recommends testing your well water annually for coliform bacteria, nitrates, dissolved solids, and pH levels. You can contact us to schedule a water testing appointment. You will especially want to get your well water tested if you have had any flooding in your area due to snow melting or any local water source overflowing.
