Water well systems are not something that you want to ignore or forget about during the cold winter months. Although most systems are built and installed to withstand colder temperatures on their own, there are some things you can do to do be caring for your water system during winter. A frozen water system can cost you a lot of money, so be sure to at least check on your system periodically throughout the winter.
Insulate Pipes
Water well systems often have exposed pipes that could become susceptible to freezing. This could be pipes that are either directly outside your home or business, or pipes that are located in a basement that is either unfinished or they are directly against an exterior wall of the basement. You can either wrap the pipe with heating tape or foam insulation.
Well Pit Cover
It may seem obvious, but checking your well pit cover and ensuring how secure it is will be important. You never know, something may have happened during the year to cause it to loosen, whether intentionally or unintentionally. To take it a step further, you can consider adding a layer of insulation underneath your well pit cover. If you live in the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan or another colder state, you may also consider getting a well pit heater.
Keep Your Water Running
The quickest way to end up with frozen pipes or even a frozen well pump is to turn your water off completely, especially during a really cold spell. If temperatures drop into the single digits or below zero, you may want to consider running a few of your faucets at a very low pressure. Just a small stream of water flowing through your pipes can keep them from freezing up on you.
